Oct 15 '12 Red Bull Stratos: Mission Accomplished

Posted in: News

Austria’s Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission. Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,137 km jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.

ROSWELL, New Mexico – After flying to an altitude of 39,044 meters (128,097 feet) in a helium-filled balloon on Sunday morning, Felix Baumgartner completed a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

Baumgartner landed safely with his parachute in the desert of New Mexico after jumping out of his space capsule at 39,044 meters and plunging back towards earth, hitting a maximum of speed of 1,137 km/h through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:19-minute long freefall. Baumgartner’s jump lasted a total of 9:03 minutes. Countless millions of people around the world watched his ascent and jump live on television broadcasts and live stream on the Internet. At one point during his freefall Baumgartner appeared to spin rapidly, but he quickly re-gained control and moments later opened his parachute as members of the ground crew cheered and viewers around the world heaved a sigh of relief.

* The data on the records set by the jump are preliminary pending confirmation from the authorized governing bodies.

Sep 12 '12 The Used Tour Announcement

Posted in: News

Unfortunately we are having to pull out of our US West Coast dates w/ The Used later this month due to illness. Sorry to everyone who had a ticket but we’ll be back fighting fit as soon as possible. Sam has a written a few words about the reasons we’re having to cancel and you can see them below.

Once again, big apologies USA and we’ll see you soon!

TA

It is with deep regret, disappointment and frustration that we have been advised to pull out of the forthcoming West Coast tour with The Used due to an issue I am experiencing with the muscles in my throat. “Muscle Tension Dysphonia” is the technical term, but I’d like to put it a different way. Being in this band is our lifelong passion, so the idea of stopping to rest hasn’t really crossed our minds these past 5 years. If you want something badly enough you’ve got to go out there and earn it, but that also means pushing yourself to your limits and then past the line. The problem is we have not stopped pushing and it is my throat that has finally said “no more”. We’ve watched our fan base grow in the States this last year and have made great memories with you all so it is particularly bad timing, but this decision is to ensure that we can keep on rocking and therefore rolling through your towns and cities for the years to come with that Scottish whiny tone you’ve grown to accept. To our UK fans fear not as this decision has you all in mind. We owe a lot of thanks to you guys for everything we have achieved on this album so far and this being it’s final hurrah we naturally thought you wouldn’t want a squawking weasel in front of you all on stage. Our October & November tour will remain the same due to vocal therapy sessions that I’ll be partaking in over the next few weeks. Here’s to the community we are all becoming part of.

Hoping and trusting you will understand… Big love, Sam McTrusty. (ULTRA)
